Asbestos is a lethal material and exposure to its fibres can be deadly. It is possible to control asbestos and exposure to it with various training and surveying by trained professionals but still people do not follow legislation and put themselves and others at risk.

It is widely accessible to employers and duty holders to undertake asbestos surveys and training, and to provide training for its employees but in many cases they do not take advantage of this.

It was very common to use asbestos in all types of construction before the year 2000 when it was banned, so today more cases of Mesothelioma are being diagnosed. Mesothelioma is a lung and chest cancer which derives from exposure to asbestos. Over 5000 people die each year from exposure to asbestos and over 3000 people are newly diagnosed with Mesothelioma.

There has been a recent case against Waltham Forest council in East London brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The council failed to protect its employees, contractors and anyone else who had to visit the building, from the dangers of asbestos which was present in the Town Hall building, discovered in 2002. Employees stated that they felt as though their lives were put at risk after no further checks were carried out and the asbestos was disturbed exposing asbestos fibres including cancer causing dust.

Victims of Asbestos related illness are usually employees that have suffered through the negligence if their employers. Duty holders, or people that are responsible for premises are required by law to partake in asbestos surveys so as they do not put any unnecessary risk onto employees. This is why asbestos surveys are imperative, whether refurbishment/demolition or management, it a survey will locate the asbestos and make sure disturbances to the material are unlikely to happen to avoid fabrics breaking off and inhalation.
